ORANGE BIKE RIDE 2023 – Kāpiti 30 April

Following a successful event in 2022, we are organising another Orange Bike Ride in Kāpiti this year, scheduled for 30 April.
The Orange Bike Ride aims to promote cycling as a sustainable means of transport which helps us to address climate change through a standout and enjoyable family-oriented event connecting New Zealanders with the local Dutch communities in as many regions as possible across Aotearoa New Zealand.

Arriving from 9.30am in Otaihanga Domain the Start will be at 10am, with prize giving at 11.30am. Prizes are given for the best orange dressed bike and biker.

Dutch biscuits for everybody, plus games and activities for the children upon finishing the track, hosted by the council.

Full O Beans Coffee will be there with their coffee cart, serving Dark Horse.

People can ride the reasonably short track along Waikanae River once or multiple times. While waiting for prize giving, games and activities are available for the children.

Paekākāriki Community Orchard. Learn a little
about the whenua where the Orchard is sited
from Ngāti Haumia. Bring something for the
swap/share table (plants, cuttings, fruit/veg,
seeds, flowers, preserves, baking, kombucha,
etc.) and share gardening questions to our
expert panel in Gardeners Question Time at 3pm.

KEEPING FED: HOUSEHOLD EMERGENCY PLANNING
Local Emergency Management Advisor, Renee
Corlett will chat about how a disaster could
affect keeping you and your whānau/family fed.
What you can do to reduce the impacts and
share ideas together such as: The impacts of
an emergency on mealtimes, what’s helpful to
have on hand and how to make use of what
you already have, storing food and water cost
effectively, vege gardens and flooding, your
ideas and traditional knowledge.

EARTHWORKERS: GROW RADICAL HOPE THROUGH FOOD
Whether you are a passionate home gardener,
environmental advocate, urban farmer, market,

biology by enrolling into this course you become
part of a network that is growing radical hope
through food. This is an introduction to the
earthworkers course to gauge interest in one
being held in the Kāpiti region at a later date.

LEY BABY LEY – HERBAL LEY AND FRUIT TREE PRUNING
Learn more about how to prune your fruit trees
and give it a go yourself. Creating living mulch to
keep trees warm during winter and cool during the
hotter months have multiple benefits for biodiversity,
beneficial insects and overall garden health. We will
design and plant some together, bring along a koha

CELEBRATE EASTER WITH NGĀ MANU NATURE RESERVE

Over $3,000 worth of sponsored prizes to be won. Children can join in the
annual Easter Rock Hunt around the reserve searching for chocolate Easter
eggs. If they luck in and find the rare decorated wooden eggs also hidden, they
win a lucky dip sponsored prize.

Waikanae, Kapiti Coast — Ngā Manu Nature Reserve’s Easter celebrations
run every day throughout the long weekend from Friday 7 th April to
Monday 10 April inclusive.

Running for the third consecutive year, the ever-popular Easter Rock
Hunt will occur daily Friday to Monday. Children are tasked to find the
decorated easter rocks hidden around the reserve to win a chocolate
Easter Egg. If they find one of the special large eggs, they win a lucky dip
sponsored prize. Prizes include family passes to Pūkaha, Staglands,
Wellington Zoo or Coastlands Aquatic Centre with water slide,
Southwards Car Museum and so much more.

Ngā Manu’s celebrations also include an Easter scavenger hunt nature
trail, face painting, an onsite colouring competition and an Easter Egg
wishing tree.

There will be daily appearances from Keri the Easter Kiwi who will be
available for selfies and family photos, and a sausage sizzle and hot & cold
drinks tent on site. Families can bring a picnic and blanket and make a day
of it.

The iconic eel talks, and pole feed will run at 12pm and 2pm daily during
the school holidays.

A reminder that we are running the Horsey Holiday Programme through the School Holidays!

The dates for the next Horsey Holiday Programme are:

  • Monday 17 April to Thursday 20 April 
7–12-year-olds can attend from 9am to 3pm on any day at $60 per day.
(Please bring suitable clothes for weather conditions and morning tea and lunch)

5 and 6-year-olds can attend Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9am to 12 noon at $35 per day - (Please bring suitable clothes for weather conditions and morning tea)
