General Information as @ 1 March
When
Tuesday 28th August until Friday 31st August.
Venue
We will now be staying at the Lake Taupo Christian Camp in Mission Bay. The camp consists of a wide variety of accommodation and is purpose built for school groups. Its facilities are of a very high standard.
Cost
The base charge per pupil charge is $430 (To be confirmed)
The base cost for parent helpers is yet to be confirmed.
Additional costs will be added for snowboarders and people hiring clothing.
Fund raising
Some pupils have already raised a significant amount towards their costs and all students will be given three further opportunities to raise funds for their own account by way of Chocolate Sales, sponsored Polar Bear Swim and Stalls Day. A personalised account will be sent home closer to the time showing the amounts raised and owing etc.
Payment of Fees
Parents can pay the Ski Camp fees in full, in instalments, by automatic payment or any other arrangement that bests suits you. Payment in full is required by 17 August. We urge you to make contact with the office should you wish to make progress payments of any sort. Again finance will not be a barrier to any child attending camp, so please contact Bevan Campbell if there are any issues in this area.
Volunteer Parents
As with all trips of this nature we need parent volunteers. In previous years we have been inundated with parents offering their services and we hope that this will again be the case. Unfortunately we cannot take every parent and some will miss out. At this stage we are looking for 15-18 volunteers. The primary prerequisite for this role is a commitment to work hard to make the trip a success for all of our students.
If you are intending to volunteer you will need to be aware of the following:
If you are intending to volunteer you will need to fill out and return the following forms (to be posted on the School Website in Term 2).
Programme Outline
The master plan for the camp is as follows:
Tuesday: Travel up on buses Stop at Waiouru or Turangi. Arrival at camp, set up cabins, dinner followed by a hot swim.
Wednesday: Travel to Whakapapa Ski Fields. Begin with a lesson then skiing and boarding! Travel back to camp for dinner followed by either a hot swim..
Thursday: Back up to Whakapapa for more skiing and snowboarding. Travel back for dinner, concert and disco.
Friday: Pack up camp, stop at either Waiouru or Taihape for lunch. Then travel back to school and home.
Alternative Programme Outline
Because there is a chance that the ski fields could be closed, we have also planned a complete alternative camp including the following activities: Visits to Craters of the Moon, Rock Climbing, Taupo Volcanic Centre, Huka Falls, Aratiatia dam, an underground power station, bush walks, cat-fishing, geothermal heated pools, and the Waikato River Queen.
Gear
A Gear List is available in the Forms section. It is vital for the success of the camp that children have the correct clothing as they are likely to get cold and wet if they don't. Large drying rooms are available at camp to dry ski gear ready for the next day. We suggest that you begin to gather up these items now so we can begin to collect the extra gear that will be required for those that don't have it. If you have any spare items of clothing that you are prepared to lend to a child for the duration of camp, can you please contact the school. The most important items on the list are polypropylene tops (and preferably pants as well) which are available from any outdoor clothing shop (such as Doyle's, Kathmandu) as well as The Warehouse which has limited stock.
