Parent Representative (Chairperson)
My name is John Baillie, I have lived up the Kapiti Coast for over six years and I have three children (13, 5 and 1) who I adore.
What do I believe about schools and education?
I want our children to love learning. I want them to develop what they are passionate about. I am not a fan of standardised tests – life is a whole lot more complicated than that!
I also believe that we should not wrap our children in cotton wool – we learn just as much by doing as we do by reading. I also believe that schools are an essential part of our communities and that as parents and caregivers we have a crucial role in helping our school thrive.
What would I bring to the Board?
My experience comes from being a parent, a trained psychologist and a person who is responsible for the corporate functions e.g. HR, Legal, Health and Safety and IT, for one of NZ’s largest property businesses. Along with these roles I have previous experience on the Board of the Human Resources Institute of New Zealand.
I not only bring my knowledge and experience from my various roles, but also a passion for helping our children engage in science, technology and maths. Previously I was involved in the establishment of the NZ Science Media Centre and the Science Learning Hub (a key tool for NZ schools teaching science).
I have a deep personal understanding of the needs of children who have challenges with learning, having trained as a psychologist and as a brother with a profoundly disabled twin sister.
Running a school these days is a complicated business (health & safety, accounting, HR, technology, property management etc). I believe I can bring all my corporate skills and life experience to help the school operate well.
