Amanda joined the staff at Waikanae in 2014. She is the Reading Recovery Teacher, and is passionate about helping students to experience success in their reading.
She works with six and seven year olds, and is constantly developing creative ways to engage each of the individuals she works with.

Regina currently teaches a Year 1/2 class in Room 20. Her teaching experience spans Years 0 - 6 but she has found her passion in teaching Juniors. Her abilities in these early years of education have been enhanced by her experience as a Reading Recovery teacher. Her long standing involvement in the Performing Arts is reflected in her teaching style encouraging children’s imaginations and love of learning.

Lucy graduated with a Bachelor of Education in 2001 and started her teaching career straight away down the road at Kapanui School. She began teaching at Waikanae School in 2010 and is very proud to be part of the school community. Lucy enjoys teaching the Year 7/8 students and helping to prepare them for their secondary school years. She has a passion for developing resilience and growth mindsets. Lucy has been part of the Asian Language Learning in Schools programme and is enjoying the challenge of learning and teaching Mandarin Chinese in her class. Lucy is passionate in the area of the Performing Arts and a yearly highlight is working with the Year 7/8 students on a dance to perform at the Art Splash Festival.
Study Leave for 2019

Peter, will be on Study Leave for 2019 working towards his Masters Degree. He will return to part time teaching later in the year. Peter was formerly part of our Year 5 / 6 teaching team. He has extensive experience in the teaching sector and the wider educational community. He continues his role as the Staff Representative on the BoT and has been active in NZEI, including serving as the Chairperson of the Kapiti Branch NZEI. Peter’s passion for the effective use of ICT as a learning tool, his interest in student self-efficacy and enabling students to become self-managing, has guided his classroom teaching practice. Peter’s other community roles such as a marriage and funeral celebrant reflect his interest in the pastoral care of students and school colleagues. Class pets have been a constant feature of his classroom spaces

Jason joins our team in 2019 having taught for a number of years at Clearview Primary School (Christchurch). Jason was born and bred on the coast and he is moving home. We look forward to having him as part of our team.

Lisa has taught at Waikanae School for a number of years and teaches in the Y7/8 syndicate.
Teacher New Entrant Year Room 5
Aretha joins Waikanae School teaching the New Entrant/Year One class in Room 5. Aretha gained her Bachelor degree in Primary Education & Dance in 2002. She taught in London and Gibraltar for 6 years and more recently in Sydney where she taught Years 4-7 for 7 years and took the role of Assistant Principal for two years. She moved to NZ in November to raise her two children and to be closer to her husband’s family.
Aretha loves teaching. Her classroom is a fun and creative space where the students she teaches can feel valued, confident, challenged and safe on their learning journey.

Catherine joins our team in 2019. She finished her Degree in Education and then completed a Graduate Diploma in Primary Teaching in 2010. Creating a positive and safe learning environment is important to Catherine to ensure all the kids in her class feel comfortable to try new things and grow from the mistakes they make during their learning journey. Catherine enjoys incorporating student’s cultures and interests into her planning to ensure lessons are meaningful to the students she teaches.

Carly joined the staff during Term One 2011 in a day to day capacity and we were so impressed that we have continued to employ. Carly is in her eighth year of teaching and 2019 will be her first year teaching at the Year 5-6 level.

Doris teaches in our Year 1/2 syndicate. Doris joined the staff in 2006 as a part time teacher and worked in various classes. She has taught years 2-6 over her period of time here and presently teaches one of our year 2 classes in Room 8. Doris is one of our Kapa Haka Tutors and has guided much of the development of our positive relationship with the local Marae. The annual Matariki celebration, the Takiri o te Ata festival with other local schools and the powhiri to welcome our new tamariki and whanau to the school have been some of the key contributions that have helped develop our Whanaungatanga Value.

BA Hons Graphic Design and Diploma in Education
Sam is into his third year teaching at Waikanae School. He started out completing a BaHons in graphic design but moved on to run community youth projects in Asia orientated around literacy and sustainability. He completed his DipEd at Auckland University. Since then Sam has taught professionally in Hawkes Bay and the UK. Now, with a decade of experience in the 'classroom' and across year groups, specialising in visual art, science and I.T. he is excited to be a part of the Year 7 8 teaching team at Waikanae.

During 2019 Natasha will be working in a Job Share with Mandy Shaw in Room 1. Natasha completed her Bachelor of Education in 2000 and since then has taught in Palmerston North, Invercargill, London and Wellington before settling in Kapiti with her husband and two young girls. She looks forward to working part time in Te Waharua Rua for 2019.

Tracy began her career in finance and human resources. She has always had a love of teaching and in 2014 completed a Graduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning (Primary).
Tracy has a passion for literacy and phonics and hopes to instil a love of reading and writing in her students. She also enjoys teaching and learning Mandarin and Chinese culture with her students..
Tracy is excited to be continuing her teaching journey at Waikanae School in Room 21 in a Year 1/2 class.

Rachel will once again be teaching in our Year 5 6 Syndicate. Rachel is an experienced teacher who has worked at many schools on the Coast. She is also a parent with two of her three daughters attending Waikanae School with her.

Bachelor of Education (English History)
Glynis entered the teaching profession over twenty years ago and feels very fortunate to have had the opportunity to teach in New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom during her career. A move to the Kapiti Coast in 2016, found Glynis relieving in a number of Kapiti schools before finding her niche at Waikanae School. She is currently teaching one of our NE/Yr 1 classes and is passionate about fostering our tamariki’s natural enthusiasm for learning.

Annabel joins Waikanae School in Te Poutama syndicate. She has been a teacher for fourteen years. Annabel has taught in Wellington at Cashmere Avenue and Kelburn School, and overseas in London, Tanzania, and most recently she taught for three years in Singapore. She lives with her husband and six month old daughter and is looking forward to raising her family in the beautiful Kapiti Coast.

Mandy has been with Waikanae School for a number of years. She has taught at a variety of levels throughout the school. In 2019 Mandy will be teaching in a 'Job Share' with Natasha Nilsson.

Bachelor of Learning and Teaching (Canterbury)
Kelsey gained her Bachelor of Teaching & Learning at the University of Canterbury in 2013. She taught for two years in Christchurch before moving up to Kapiti in 2016. 2019 will be her fourth year at Waikanae School. Kelsey is passionate about teaching maths and is one of the teachers on the Maths Leadership Team.

In 2019 Moira will teach one of our 'start up' Entrant/Year One classes in either in Room 5 or Room 1. She has been teaching for many years on the Kapiti Coast and brings a wealth of experience to the junior school.
